G-Lab, in association with the School of Global Studies (SGS), was founded to help social entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality and sustain their social enterprises. Our mission is to partner with social entrepreneurs and key supporting players to build the capacity of social enterprises and co-create social innovation. We also provide workshops suitable for social enterprises and high impact (social purpose) organizations at various stages, ranging from incubation to scaling and growing stage.
Our work concentrates in 3 main areas
Through our social innovation process, we work closely in collaboration with organizations who need fresh perspectives and new solutions or approaches in order to create new social innovations to greater their social impacts. Our clients come from various sectors including private companies, social enterprises, government, public organizations, and NGOs.
Our process is human-centered, lean, holistic, and collaborative. We seek to understand and empathize with each stakeholder who will be using or be affected by our new products or creations. Moreover, we recognize that social challenges happen in the context of complex social system interactions; thus, we also seek to develop holistic understanding of the problem and its context and how each component in the system interact. We then take those deep understandings as the core values when designing, creating and testing new prototypes with our client organizations. These processes are iterative and constantly changing by nature. At the end, however, we make sure that whatever we create, it answers to the real needs of the stakeholders.
Our collaborative projects could be focusing on design research — scoping the context, identifying challenges, understanding target users or focusing on innovation — innovating for higher impact, prototyping and testing new solutions products or even scaling-up strategy.
Our past and on-going co-creation projects
Incubation & Scaling Up
From passions to ideas, from ideas to business models, from business models to start-ups; social entrepreneurs often face different challenges in every step along the way to the success of creating the social enterprises they have envisioned. At G-Lab, we have worked closely with social entrepreneurs from the very first step of framing the social challenges to testing prototypes. Starting from identifying existing challenges, one would need to generate ideas to approach such challenges and then try to further develop and test a prototype to strengthen the ideas.
After testing the prototype and proving that their models work, social entrepreneurs at this stage would need strategies to grow their enterprises and scale up their social impact. We provide wide ranges of strategies including expanding the organization itself or letting others play a part in spreading the innovation. Because at this stage, each social enterprise is facing different challenges which requires different focuses, we work closely with each social enterprise on a case-by-case basis.
We are providing our services on 5 keys areas:
|Research Insight||Research insights and user feedback concern with background research design to make sure that our partners understand the root cause of the problem and truly serve their target group(s) in ways that they hope to achieve.|
|Scaling Plan||Scaling plan is where we and our partners sit down and walk through their short-term and long-term visions and from there develop a strategy to make visions into reality. In the process, we also leverage our existing networks to match them up with key players in the sector who could effectively assist them in specific areas to scale.|
|Social Impact Assessment||Social impact measurement covers basic skills such as statistical knowledge to present the information and more advanced skills such as measuring the organization social return on investment (SROI).|
|Project Pitching||In project pitching, we help social entrepreneurs to reflect on their ideas and what they are trying to achieve and develop a personal skill such as communication, public speaking and presentation.|
Through the following workshops or focus areas we are providing, social entrepreneurs are able to walk through process of cultivating their passion and ideas into reality in a less confusing fashion.
Participants will be exposed to different case studies of social innovations both in Thailand and globally and models of how to sustain social organizations. Participants will also explore a wide range of tools that are helpful to start a social purpose organization and a social enterprise. Key elements will also be discussed in order to best address the social problems, come up with solutions, measure, and scale.
Participants will learn about the steps of the Design Thinking, a creative process that is used to address social and business challenges, which involve
- understanding your users/customers, whereby the participants will be exposed to a wide range of research design tools and creative learning,
- how to synthesize information, as well as frame and reframe the problem,
- learn about approaches to brainstorm and idea generation techniques in order to discover innovative approaches that truly addressed the “real needs” of your target users/customers, and
- learn how to develop prototyping in order to test ideas and gain feedback to continue to improve and better serve its targeted users/ customers.
This workshop will introduce variety of tools and concepts that can help strengthen creative capacity and make innovation happen. Participants will learn about the meaning of innovation along with practical case examples, innovation process, principles of creativity, creative tools and experiments, and how to develop innovation strategy for the organizations.
This workshop will provide a basic overview of critical thinking and reasoning. Participants will be guided toward an understanding of the importance of critical thinking, as well as how to apply this skill in daily life. At the end of the workshop, participants will see the relationship between critical and creative thinking, and will be attuned to questioning information from sources before accepting its veracity.
We will focus on qualitative research, structuring interviews, capturing, coding, and making sense of data, all within the context of design thinking. Participants will learn to frame and reframe the hypotheses that need testing. The workshop will present research as an iterative process of forming hypotheses, gathering data, testing and building persona overtime. The workshop will also cover visual methods to represent and communicate data.
This workshop will cover customer discovery, customer development, and solution development in the context of the Lean Startup Canvas. Participants will be guided in developing interview questions design to test assumptions.
Participants will be given a theoretical overview of group formation and group dynamics. The workshop will cover the structure team effectiveness and participants will learn to play the role of process consultant.
Organizations we have provided workshops for...
Intel China, UNDP, USAID, Changefusion, Ashoka, Mae Fah Luang Foundation (Doi Tung), Design for Social Innovation and Leadership from UNPeace, Professors of Chulalongkorn Business School, TRUE Cooperation, and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB).
In addition to a workshop, we also work one on one with a budding organization to help them in specific areas such as grant proposal writing, basic legal knowledge and personal skill development, e.g. communication, public speaking, teamwork, and coaching skills.
