The Right to Protest

“The Right to Protest” which took place on May 2, 2018, SGS co-hosted with the Faculty of Political Science and Sanya Dharmasakti Institute for Democracy at the Thammsat University (Tha Prachan campus).
Four highly distinguished speakers, Rangsiman Rome, Amarin Saichan, Pimsiri Petchnamrob and Matthew Bugher (an SGS faculty member), discoursed at great lengths about how ‘The Right to Protest’ is a basic human right.
The speakers were unanimous in their view that peaceful protest plays a vital role in initiating meaningful change. They emphasized that uninformed or misguided protest activity (ies) can prove harmful to any cause and diminish the overall rationale for citizen action. The seminar received extensive media coverage with the speakers concluding that peaceful protest is integral to the rights of all citizens and the legitimacy of the democratic process.
