Creating awareness on water polution

Besides the children, the teachers in the community school also participated in our workshop. As such, teachers are now able to run workshops and teach other students about water pollution and how to make EM balls.

Problem:

Tha-It is a low-income community in Bangkok, surrounded by wooden houses and the Chao Phraya river. One of the problems that the community face is water pollution. Wastewater from households go into the canal which is also a source of water for the community.

Solution:

After doing more research, we decided to teach the community how to make EM Balls. EM balls are made up of mud, organic materials and effective microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and phototrophic bacteria. The idea behind EM balls is that the microorganisms from the balls will create more beneficial microorganisms that will stop the growth of bad microorganisms.

We did research on EM balls by reviewing existing literature, talking to experts and trying our hands on making the EM balls. We also improved our EM ball by substituting some of the organic materials to reduce the bad smell. We found that putting in meat will cause the ball to smell very bad. As such, we used more fruits and catalysts to make the balls.

In the process of making EM balls, we realized that it is not a very sustainable project to make the balls ourselves and hand them to the community. As such, we decided to teach the children from the community school to make their own EM balls. In order to involve the children in the process, we first raised awareness about the water pollution problem. When the children came to realized that they and their families were part of the problem, they became more enthusiastic in being part of our project. We encouraged the children to be creative in their production process as well by experimenting with making the EM balls in different shapes.
