GSSE Lecture Highlight
This time we would like you to meet with our lovely GSSE lecturer— Ajarn Stéphane P. Rousseau. Known among students for his academic rigor, and strong background and experience in Humanitarian Assistance & Operations, Development & International Cooperation, he always gives good advice and coaching on the topics.
The courses Aj.Stéphane teaches at GSSE are GS250, GS250, and GS290. These are some of the interesting courses you will get to learn in class—and Aj. Stéphane will succintly explain to you what his courses are about below!
GS250 Project Management (3 credits)
This course introduces students to all aspects of project management: how to manage people, time, money, communication, procurement, risks, quality, stakeholders, and scope, and how to ensure all these works well together. Students will also learn how to pack their whole project into a well-structured logical framework (logframe). But, before that, they will review and reflect on the role projects play in society and in country development in general, and how they contribute – knowingly or not – to a certain vision of development and society. The course includes practice to apply principles and concepts learned in class and will develop the specific manager’s mindset. The course finishes with the ultimate management and leadership skills of boundary spanning, one of the top skills students should be equipped with in the 21st century.
GS250 Globalization Flows (3 Credits)
In this course, students are presented the main “flows” that characterize globalization: flows of people (migration), flow of pathogens (pandemic), and Flows of Information and Data [NB. financial flows and flows of goods sand eservices are covered in another course]. Students are first introduced to the concept of “complexity”, developing the “right” mindset to apprehend complex global issues. They are then introduced to the theories of migrations followed by guest speakers giving real-life testimonies. Students are then familiarized with the “Global Health” approach and all its implications. For the Data and Information flow, students review who controls the latter, the influence of the social media, how algorithms can impact the economy, the politics and the society, from a global level down to the family level. The course includes reflections, debates, group work — including on specific tools — and are exposed to real-life experiences of globalization.
GS290 Professional Development Portfolio 1 (PDP1) (1 Credit)
The portfolio serves as the culminating working that documents and assesses the student’s
acquisition of knowledge and professional competences attained through the year. The following
products are components of the portfolio: a resume listing learning experiences; a matrix
displaying sources of acquisition of the competences; a personal statement on philosophy, values
and education goals; a career development plan; and a chronological collection of reflections
on learning. In this first part of a three-course series, the students learn basic skills in professional
development, such as resume and cover letter, interview skills, and networking skills. In addition,
a self-reflection video is a required component.
