Requirements for the PhD in Social Innovation and Sustainability

ROUTE 1 (PLAN 2.1) COURSEWORK AND RESEARCH
  1. Hold a Master Degree in any field of study, or have a minimum 3 years working experience and expertise in related fields of study.
  2. Have a composite GPA of 3.25 or equivalent.
  3. Statement of purpose and area(s) of interest (1 page)
  4. Submit a Research Proposal (English)
  5. Fulfill the English proficiency requirements set by Thammasat University Graduate Studies.
  6. Letters of recommendation from at least 2 persons who are familiar with your work and/or academic performance. Preferably, one reference must be from prior instructor/ institution.

Remark: Applicants not satisfying these requirements will be assessed on a case by case basis.

 
ROUTE 2 (PLAN 2.2) COURSE WORK AND RESEARCH (BA>PHD)
  1. Hold a Bachelor Degree in any field of study.
  2. Have a composite GPA of 3.50 or a first-class honor or five years of work experience in a field that is relevant to social innovation
    and/or sustainability and relevant to their proposed research topic.
  3. Statement of purpose and area(s) of interest (1 page)
  4. Submit a Research Proposal (English)
  5. Fulfill the English proficiency requirements set by Thammasat University Graduate Studies.
  6. Letters of recommendation from at least 2 persons who are familiar with your work and/or academic performance. Preferably, one reference must be from prior instructor/ institution.

  1. Hold a Master Degree in Social Innovation and Sustainability, School of Global Studies.
  2. Have a composite GPA of 3.25, or equivalent.
  3. Statement of purpose and area(s) of interest (1 page)
  4. Submit a Research Proposal (English)
  5. Fulfill the English proficiency requirements set by Thammasat University Graduate Studies.
  6. Letters of recommendation from at least 2 persons who are familiar with your work and/or academic performance. Preferably, one reference must be from prior instructor/ institution.

Write a short statement of how you became interested in a career in academic research; why you are interested in the PhD program in Social Innovation and Sustainability; and your career goals after graduation. Address in particular how the PhD program may help you advance your goals. (The statement should not exceed 1000 words in length.)

7. RESEARCH STATEMENT

Write a short statement of your research interests and potential dissertation research topic(s). While a sophisticated review of the relevant literature is not expected at this time, you are encouraged to present a well-defined topic that demonstrates an up-to-date understanding of the field, a clear research question(s) and possibly a research methodology. In this statement, please also identify a faculty member at the School of Global Studies who may serve as your dissertation advisor. (The statement should not exceed 4000 words in length.)

8. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

From at least 2 persons who are familiar with your work and/or academic performance. Preferably, one reference must be from prior instructor/institution.      

9. ACADEMIC WRITING SAMPLE(s).
It could be a sample of academic writing in English or a Master's Thesis research paper from your past work.
 
10. PAY THE APPLICATION FEE (1,000 BAHT)

Qualifications and Admission Requirements

Qualifications

1. Applicants must have specific qualifications for each track as follows:

Track 2.1 (Coursework and Research – 60 credits)

a. Hold a Master’s degree in any field or have experience/expertise in a related field.

b. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 or equivalent. However, the program committee may consider applicants with a GPA below 3.25 if they can present academic achievements to the committee for further consideration.

c. A minimum of 3 years working experience is preferred.

Track 1.1(Research – 57 credits)

a. Hold a Master’s degree in Social Innovation & Sustainability from the School of Global Studies, Thammasat University.

b. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 or equivalent. However, the program committee may consider applicants with a GPA below 3.25 if they can present academic achievements to the committee for further consideration.

Track 2.2 (Coursework and Research – 81 credits)

a. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field.

b. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 or equivalent of first-class honors.

 

2. Applicants must qualify as appeared in Thammasat University Regulations on Graduate Studies, 2018.

Notes:

  • – The English Proficiency Test Score Report must not exceed 2 years from the exam date to the date of the interview.
  • – We do not accept the TOEFL Essentials test and TOEFL ITP.
  • – Exemption: Applicants who are citizens of an English-speaking country (e.g., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA) are exempted. Proof of citizenship must be submitted.
  • – Applicants who have earned a degree from a university where English is the primary medium of instruction may submit a certificate of English Medium Instruction, signed by the University Registrar. However, the SGS has the right to accept or reject such certificates based on the applicant’s qualifications and the use of the English language observed during the admission. The certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of graduation to the date of application.

Scholarship Opportunities

The PhD program offers three scholarships: fully funded, partial scholarships of 50% and 25%. These merit-based scholarships are awarded competitively based on the candidate's academic excellence, the rigor of their research proposal, and their potential scholarly contributions to the program. Applicants are encouraged to seek external funding from independent sources as well. Those interested in the scholarships can indicate their interest on the application form and complete the application between the 1st and 3rd application rounds only.
