We recently wrote about the public’s biggest concerns (link), based on a recent nationwide survey of 1,000 Thais. Environment emerged as the number one public concern, but what are the biggest specific environmental issues for people across Thailand and how are they responding to them?
.
Participants were asked to choose the top 3 environmental issues. The top issue was global warming, chosen by almost half of those participating, closely followed by air pollution which was chosen by more than 2 in 5 people. These two issues were followed by climate change, traffic congestion, poor waste management and drought.
.
Many people claim to have changed daily activities and behaviours in response to environmental concerns, with more than half using more reusable bags and containers. Almost half also refuse to purchase illegal forest products and reducing use of household electricity (air conditioners, lights, etc). Separating and recycling waste and reducing out-of-home electricity use were also popular.
.
It seems that many Thais perceive the need to take personal actions to address such an important issue. The next and final article will focus on how Thais perceive the different responsibilities of citizens, government and commercial organisations.
